The weather was warm and a group of local runners made the most of it to post some fast times at the SHSAA provincial cross country championships in Regina.
Central’s Lindsay Fish who finished second in the junior girls race Saturday.
“I was just hoping for a top-10 finish. I wasn’t expecting to medal,” said Fish. “I had a strong start I guess and I was able to keep up with my pace.”
Fish broke away early with a three runner group and she felt being so close to the front — and in medal position — helped her keep a fast pace.
In the end she finished comfortably in second place.
“The leader was really far ahead of me and the other girl wasn’t too close behind so I just had to keep my pace,” said Fish who finished in a faster time at provincials than she did at the district race in Moose Jaw.
Fish won a silver medal in the 3,000 metres at the SHSAA provincial track and field championships last year.
Vanier’s Sadie Schaffer finished 10th in the race.
Peacock coach Renee Verge said that all of the athletes from the Prairie South School Division raced very well. Many of the competitors posted personal best times on the flat, fast course and had their best performances to date.
In the senior boys’ race, Peacock’s Regan Silversides finished fourth.
Peacock’s Tye Buettner was sixth in the senior girls race.
