One school won their fifth-straight high school volleyball city championship, the other the first in school history.
Both games were epic five set battles that went to the limit.
The Peacock Toilers overcame a two-games-to-one deficit to defeat the Central Cyclones 23-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-17, 26-24 in a match that lived up to the pre-game hype between the two perennial Moose Jaw League girls league contenders.
Things were even more dramatic in the boys final, as the vast underdog Vanier Vikings also rallied from a 2-1 deficit to shock the Caronport Cougars 3-2 in the gold medal match. The Vikings trailed 18-13 in the first game but came back to win 25-23. Caronport won two of the next three games 25-13, 21-25, 25-20 to force a fifth set, which Vanier won 25-18.
The win was the first boys volleyball title for the Vikings in Moose Jaw High School Athletic Directorate history,
Interestingly enough, both fallen teams still have volleyball left in their seasons — the Cyclones play in the 5A girls provincial championship this weekend, the Cougars in the 4A boys regional playdown with the goal of advancing to provincials at Riverview the Nov. 27 weekend.
