Caronport 2-0 at 4A girls volleyball provincials

Friday the Central Cyclones managed to take a set off of the Regina champion Campbell Tartans.

Unfortunately the Cyclones lost the match and had two sub par performances sandwiched around the set win.

“It was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” said Central coach Brad Hennenfent. “To win provincials you have to lay yourself on the line and put your body on the floor. I don’t expect them to score points. I don’t expect them to serve big. I don’t expect them to win all of the time, but I do expect them work hard.

“We just picked and chose when we wanted to play and at the provincial level you can’t do that.”

The Cyclones finished the opening day at the SHSAA 5A girls provincial championships with a 1-2 record following a 2-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-16) win over North Battleford Comp. They lost in three sets to Saskatoon St. Joseph (25-20, 22-25, 25-19) and then finished the day with the 2-1 (25-10, 22-25, 25-6) loss to Campbell.

The positive heading into Saturday is that if the Cyclones can get on a roll anything is possible.

“I really think is a provincial that is wide open. I’ve been to a lot of provincials where you think that these are going to be the top two or three teams and that’s it. Right now I have no idea who the top three teams are going to be,” said Hennenfent.

“That’s kind of neat: if you work hard and get on a roll anything can happen. It’s one day and it can change so quickly.”

At the 4A girls provincial tournament in Rosetown, Caronport is a perfect 2-0 in their pool.

Caronport beat Maidstone 2-0 (25-13, 25-13) and Wynyard 2-0 (25-15, 25-12).

They will have a tough test this morning when they face 3-0 Oxbow to decide the pool winner. Caronport will round out pool play against the hosts team later Saturday morning.
