Well, it is for the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Flying Fins, at least. The local swim club opened its new season with the first meet of the year in Regina last weekend.
The event gives experienced swimmers a chance to work out the bugs and gauge where their starting point, while newcomers have a chance to get their feet wet, so to speak.
“We had about three or four new swimmers or . . . kids who did conditioning last year move up to competitive, and they went to their first meet outside of our own meet,” said Fins coach Monty Smith. “It was a great experience.”
A total of 15 Moose Jaw swimmers took part in the meet, with 11 kids setting personal best times in a variety of events.
The first meet of the year is a big one, according to Smith.
“It is important. It lets kids get rid of the jitters and butterflies in the tummy. It’s a fun event,” he said.
