Then Moose Jaw mayoral candidate Fraser Tolmie gestures during a press conference to outline his campaign platform in 2012.
On Friday, the Electoral District Association (EDA) for the new Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan riding announced Tom Lukiwski, MP of the dissolving Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre riding, as the party’s candidate for the 2015 federal election because he was unopposed. However, a statement from a spokesperson for Tolmie stated that was not the case.
In another statement from Tolmie's spokesperson on Monday, his camp further clarified the situation.
“The Conservative Electoral District Association Board of the new riding of Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan is not legitimate due to multiple breaches in the Conservative Party’s constitution," the statement reads. "These concerns have not been addressed.”
The deadline for filing nomination papers for the new riding was May 29, a deadline – “contrary to the claim of Cory Hann at Party HQ” – Tolmie’s spokesperson alleges was met.
The email also states that Tolmie’s campaign was “not advised of the (nomination) rejection until after the deadline," and that Tolmie would be willing to share “all the policy and procedure violations if necessary.”
The Times-Herald contacted Hann and in response to the violations Tolmie’s team alleges took place in the nomination process, he sent us the following statement via email:
“At the close of nominations for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan only one candidate successfully completed their package and followed the process. That was Mr. Tom Lukiwski and he was subsequently acclaimed. Applications are only accepted that are in before the deadline, fully completed and that followed the rules and procedures. Nomination rules are clearly laid out and available on our website, and the process candidates must follow is contained within the nomination notification letter which all members received.”
The letter Hann referred to was sent to Conservative party members on May 15.
Tolmie’s team believes the Conservatives will “do the right thing” and “respond to the letter our lawyer has sent to party officials.”
